Freelance

On another note. I have had some freelance work over summer, naturally I set out a cost per hour and the price was agreed. However this is when things started to go wrong. I did the work and it was still ridiculously cheap as I can work quite fast. I even contemplated added a little bit more on but they seemed cool enough with offering me more work so I left it. THEY STILL MOANED. But they weren’t happy with the price as they had set a budget of £30 for a logo. £30. What on earth. I’ve had no complaints with pricing before and they even said it was reasonable and competitive, but still not happy. They should get a comparison from agencies and more established designers. They’d pay me in seconds.

What surprised me more some other students didn’t realise that this was an unreasonable price to be asked for. £30 is nothing, I may as well go back and work in a shitty supermarket again. Don’t sell yourself short people, we still have to be qualified and educated like other professions. Don’t be afraid to charge a reasonable amount! Especially for a logo, think if how much that will be used and how important it is to the company. £30 isn’t going to cut it for me I’m afraid.

What I have learnt form this experience is ALWAYS ask if they have a budget if you are charging per hour. Or just set a flat rate for the job. I usually do flat rate plus time per hour on amendements. Freelance isn’t free don’t undersell yourself.
